ISABEL AND ROSARIO DAWSON

Both inspiring people and incredible talents.

This story is kind of crazy :) Going all the way back to the first week of September 2002.... Almost a year to the day when the morning of Sept 11th really changed the world.. I was getting ready to film in New York...The first anniversary... I hadn't booked the tickets yet... But I'd made the decision to go and my friend Dale was coming so TheWebShow dream was about to kick into reality..

I'd lived in New York for nearly two years in 99 and 2000 and it's only looking back now I realise how much that experience changed my life... My daily routine there was waking up... Walking down the road for a juice and bagel with cream cheese... Then finding a quarter in my pocket for the New York Post.... Page 6 was the gossip and entertainment page and always a favourite to read... I'd sit at the Starbucks on the corner of Greenwhich and Bank Street and read the paper and watch the people coming in and out for their morning rituals.... Just like me I guess.. Molly Shannan, Christy Turlington and Quentin Tarrantino were regulars there so it was usually a laugh..

So back to 2002 and the Gold Coast... I'm in my room checking emails and reading stories and my habit continued with the New York Post.. I'd check Page 6 online pretty much daily and on about the 3rd of Sept I read a story about Isabel and Rosario Dawson... I remember it being on the top of the page.... And it talked about a building dispute and that no rent was being paid and this was a drama being that Rosario is now successful etc....
I remember doing a quick google search of Rosario... Her name rang a bell... She'd starred in the movie Kids and had just completed Josie and the Pussy Cats... I remember having a quick read... Then that was it..

Flash to about 8 days later... Dale and I are in New York City... No real plans for anything but we ended up filming with nearly every person we came across... It was manic in every way... But so much fun... We ended up staying with my old neighbour Henry Roth (Who's starring now in the Australian version of Project Runway) I'd been on the phone that morning with an old mate in Anthony... And we arranged to meet up and film a chat before heading uptown to sit down with the legendary boxer in Jake Lamotta (The Raging Bull).

It must of been about lunch time and the three of us are walking back to where Anthony was staying.... I was looking around at the buildings.. The cafes... Bars... Funky little shops that seemed to be on every block... As we started to cross one particular street... The thought hit my mind so I asked Anthony... "Hey is this the Lower East side?".... Anthony came back with "Yeah man... This is where I live".... By now we were just reaching the other side of the street when I asked "You don't know where Rosario Dawson lives do you?".... Anthony stopped... We were now on the curb... He looked around... Pointed.. And said "Yeah... Over there"

He was pointing to a white building which was no joke about 30 meters away.. I couldn't believe it.... I hadn't thought about that article or Rosario since that moment in my room on the Gold Coast... Now here I am on the other sideof the world... In one of the busiest cities in the world... And on the very same street when the thought came to mind... "I know her mum Isabel... She's really cool".... Anthony said... I was blown away... I asked him to go over so we could meet her... We did... Anthony standing outside the steps and yelling out "Isabella.... Isabella"... Next thing someones head pops out the window with a big smile... I say hello... Telling her what I'm doing here in New York and I asked if she wouldn't mind being interviewed... She said to come back tomorrow at about the same time.... The clips below tell the story.

So the stories are just amazing... It was unreal just sitting there and hearing these moments being shared... We'd filmed with so many people in the time we were there already and the impact of Sept 11th was way way bigger than ever imagined... The way it effected people... Not just the madness aroundthe World Trade Centre... But the system and life as New Yorkers knew it... Such a priviledge to be able to share stories like the one below.

It was two years until I was back in New York and so the clips below are from the year 2004.... Again... Crazy story... Isabel and I had kept in touch through email and the occasional phone call.... In one such call she told me about a song she'd written... I remember it being an awesome story when all of a sudden she started singing it through the phone... Her booming voice... I was laughing on the other end of the phone as people walking by would have been thinking "What the?"

It was May or June in 2004 and I found myself sitting in her apartment.... The camera on a tripod... And Isabel talking about the song and how she was inspired to create it... Again... Such a cool thing to be able to share the moment.... Or moments... :) Two weeks later through some crazy choices I was back in New York.... Back filming anything and everything and lucky for me the Lower East SideFair was happening.... Rosario was there to receive an special award and Isabel had a big surprise that I was honoured to film.. I'm sure you'll enjoy the clip below :)

Part Four wraps up the story.... And a cool chance to sit down with Rosario to finally film a chat.... As of 2008 Rosario has turned into a major film star... Standing out in films like The 25th Floor... Sin City... Men in Black 2... Sidewalks of New York... Alexander etc etc.. Back in 2004 she was just starting to make waves.... So it was really cool to sit down and share some stories in how it all came to be... Hope you enjoy the clip below featuring one of the big screens most promising stars..
