Everyone has a story and everybody has a dream.... And because I make the show about anyone, anywhere at anytime... Then I'm never going to run out of content... Billions of people in probably a million places.... My dream is to feature as many as I can... The cool thing about it is that everybody is different... We might be the same in so many ways... But we're all uniquely different... Especially our dreams and goals.. And we all love being inspired by people... Seeing someone else doing it inspires us with the belief that we can too... And they're right !! Anything is possible.
This is the platform in which I've built TheWebShow. Interesting stories from people all round the world... People, places, stories, faces.
Like everything it started out with an idea... The experiences I had creating in New York and the amazing situations I found myself in... I realised that if I had of had a camera with me during those times then I'd have a pretty awesome collection of interviews and experiences to share..
So it all officially started in 2002 with a handicam that was lent to me by a girl named Casey... How did we meet? The internet.
My friend Dale and I were chatting on a local chat page and somehow Casey and I started swapping messages... A few weeks later she'd driven down from Brisbane to the Gold Coast and she was sitting on Dales Balcony... I was raving away as usual about the things I'd like to do... Like go to America and film the first anniversary of Sept 11th... But unlike the other media I wanted to capture the stories from the people.. How they felt.. A unique perspective from the every day New Yorker... I remember talking about it when Casey piped up "I've got a camera"... She paused.. My mind raced... Then she said "You can borrow it if you like?"
So welcome to TheWebShow...
Cause since that moment everything rolled into place.... Dale came with me on that first trip... We had no idea what we were doing... Yet we filmed day and night with all kinds of people from actor James Woods, to Boxing great Jake Lamotta, The head of the Ford Modeling Agency to the head of the New York Post... And about 100 interviews along the way with people of all races, shapes and sizes.. I remember that each interview had a funny story behind it.... Some almost unbelievable except for the fact they happened... When we finally got home after 12 days on the run it took longer than 16 hours to watch back the footage.. We'd captured so much... The task now was what to do with it all... I had no editing skills.... Myspace and Youtube were years away from being invented and it was super expensive to host all that footage.. All I knew was that this was my dream.... Complete freedom... A show about people and their stories..
It's pretty funny to realize that around this time I read a book that belonged to my Great Grandmother... It'd been sitting on the bookshelf longer than I'd been born.. The books title is "How to win friends and influence people".... I read it cover to cover... The overall message of the book? That this world is all about human relations... How we relate to each other is key... And that everybody wants to talk about themselves... I realized that the last line guaranteed that the dream with TheWebShow was a worthy one..
I've been on a bunch of trips since that first one... Sometimes two a year.... When my holidays rolled around from radio I'd jump on a plane to film another adventure... Again... No real plans but magic always happened... Like the night I was sitting in LAX airport and one of my all time Heroes walked by in Boxing champion Roy Jones Jr... Or I'll be somewhere random and someone knows such and such and next thing you know I'm sitting in their apartment or office with the camera rolling... It was just insane and so much fun... TheWebShow is probably one of the only shows in the world where pretty much everything is unplanned... 99% of shows made today plan everything out... Schedules.. Guests... Locations.. Topics... Questions... Segments.. etc. Not to mention the big $$ it takes to create them... They then try and have all these plans live up to expectation and add the magic in the editing suites... With TheWebShow it's best to expect the unexpected.... With no concern about what could happen because something always does happen... In all ways.. It's awesome.. It's Reality Television that's actually Real.... But on the net :)
It's just myself and a home video camera and tripod... And sometimes I don't even have the tripod.... It's just camera in hand and away we go... I think it's exciting not knowing who I'm going to meet or the places I might end up.... I also think it'd be pretty cool to watch a show like that.... A show where you don't know what's going to happen..
Anyway I'm raving again.... It's been an incredible story in how it's all come to be... I've pretty much spent every cent I've ever made in creating it... I couldn't possibly put a figure to the work I've done... Or the flights, tapes, cabs, trains, hotels, meals... I'd probably have a heart attack if I knew the figure :) But I'm living my dream... And the experiences so far are like the ad for Mastercard..... "Priceless". All I want do it share as much as I can... Cause every time I'm looking through the viewfinder of the camera I know I'm making it for everyone else... Unlimited really... So it's always an amazing feeling..
So thanks for having a look.... The clips below give an overall insight into what it's all about... People and their stories... There's wisdom in nearly every chat... My dream is to just keep doing what I'm doing and get better at it every year... So many people have helped me over the years and many continue to do so... They know who
they are and they know I'm grateful... I couldn't do it without them and that's the motto of the show... Giving is the gift and so much comes from it... It's a dream shared in so many ways... So thank you for checking out TheWebShow.
About TheWebShow Website
This is my chance to thank Adrian McHarg for what you're seeing online. I'm yet to meet Adrian bizarrely enough. But it's another example of how the internet is revolutionizing the world. Adrian emailed me over a year ago about filming with his friend Jason Jackson. I didn't know anything about Jason but I did some reading and then a few weeks later I was on my way to Jason's house for an interview. Jason is Australia's top Michael Jackson impersonator. (You can watch the clips from YouTube page here).
I then found out that Adrian made Jason's website and has a passion in photography, graphic and web design, as we started swapping emails it became clear to me that Adrian is the perfect guy to create the 'Official Site' for TheWebShow, and that's where we're at right now. Adrian's putting in a lot of work in helping me put the dream out there and I think he's doing an awesome job. Always going above and beyond what I can afford to pay him. But again it's in the spirit of what the show philosophy is about. Make sure you check out his website. He's become an important part of the journey.
